Help define national skills standards for exhibited animal care & marine wildlife

The skills required to support the health, welfare and sustainability of some of Australia’s most vulnerable animals have been captured in draft units, skill sets and qualifications.

Experts in the field have provided insight into the skills required of zoo keepers, animal carers and marine wildlife responders, so that the drafts properly reflect current work practices and skill needs.

Two new units address skills for assessing the welfare status of an animal and for promoting positive wellbeing of those working in animal care. Five new units relate to the unique skills required to respond to a marine wildlife incident. Six skill sets have also been developed, covering specialised areas within exhibited animal care and marine wildlife response.

The Certificate III and IV in Captive Animals have both been revised. The Certificate IV qualification has been updated to reflect feedback from subject matter experts that it does not reflect the current skills standards and practices of industry and that many of the units within it are already covered by the Certificate III qualification.

The drafts are available for feedback on the project page, until 11 December 2019.
