Feedback on qualifications in timber merchandising

Two new qualifications have been proposed to replace the Certificate II and III in Timber merchandising and are now available for review.

Consultation with nine timber product supply organisations indicated the titles and configuration of the current qualifications were not adequate for skilling their employees. The proposed Certificate III and IV of Timber Building Products Supply have been developed in response. They are available on the project page for feedback.

We are seeking input at this development stage in order to gain feedback on the reconfiguration of the units included in these qualifications and their alignment to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) levels. They have been developed to address the unique expertise of job roles across the supply chain of timber and related building products.

Your feedback will be considered to redraft the qualifications that will be made available for feedback again in February 2020, along with the draft units.

Skills standards under development for new timber harvesting technologies

Following consultation and site visits undertaken in September, 12 new units have been proposed for development, covering skills in geospatial and mobile technology, harvesting optimisation files, in-field wood chipping, cable logging and one for above ground chainsaw oeprations.

The proposed titles for the units can be viewed on the project page. The units will be made available for public comment in February 2020, including 25 existing units that have been reviewed, plus six units across all current forestry projects.

These updates will help support the digital and technical skills needed by the forestry industry as it adopts new technologies to improve productivity, environmental sustainability and safety.

Updating skills standards in Timber Truss & Frame Estimating & Design

While timber trusses and frames are a key element of most homes and a range of other buildings, there is a shortage of timber systems designers in Australia.

Consultation has confirmed that there is demand from small and medium timber truss and frame manufacturers for local and in house estimators and designers.

Consultation is underway to review and update 39 units and three qualifications, to better reflect job roles in the area of timber frame and truss design and manufacture. The drafts will be available for broad industry review and comment in February 2020.
