Draft skills standards for sawmilling and timber processing and for responding and assisting in bushfires available for validation

Your feedback on draft skills standards for sawmilling and timber processing and responding and assisting in bushfires has been collected and used to inform further updates to the draft qualifications, skill sets and units are now available for validation.

Responding and Assisting in Bushfires Project

Forestry operators, arborists and other service providers play an important role in the clean-up effort following bushfires. They must possess skills to minimise health and safety risks to themselves and others and to take immediate actions to prevent harm and hazards associated with dangerous trees

Two units that describe the communication and hazard skills required for this work are now available for validation and comment. Another four units relating to chainsaw operations are also available for validation.

Based on your feedback during the ‘Drafts Available’ stage:

  • the draft tree hazard and health assessment unit has been re-coded and re-named to better represent its purpose and skill level
  • an additional tree hazard assessment unit has been drafted to address the skills of personnel authorised to perform tree hazard assessment during the early stages of bushfire recovery operations
  • the basic and intermediate fell trees units have been adjusted to place greater focus on assessing the skills required to perform chainsaw cutting techniques correctly and reduce the number of trees necessary for assessment
  • the definition of felled trees has been clarified in the trim felled trees unit
  • further details have been included for learners, employers and training providers on prior experience required to begin the advanced fell trees manually unit.

Sawmilling and Timber Processing Project

As the sawmilling and engineered wood products sectors undergo rapid digital transformation and technical progress, updated skills are needed for working with state-of-the-art equipment and innovative products.

Qualifications and skills standards that capture the skills required to work with new processes and technology are now available for validation and comment.

Based on your feedback during the ‘Drafts Available’ stage:

  • waste management and National Heavy Vehicle Regulator Chain of Responsibility units have been imported into the Certificates III and IV
  • the equipment maintenance unit has been clarified to apply to saw technicians and other technical experts
  • a new requirement has been added to the GLT and CLT foundation unit for understanding product testing procedures
  • the scope of the gluing unit has been adjusted to reflect a level suited to the needs of operators and supervisors.
