Have your say on future skills needs, challenges and opportunities
Join us to discuss the current and future skills and workforce needs of the fishing and aquaculture industry. Help us tell the real story of the value of the industry and the challenges that should be met by new national skills standards, training and certification. Lunch provided.
Facilitator
Michelle Ingley-Smith, Industry Engagement Manager at Skills Impact, will gather your thoughts on current and future skills needs, challenges and opportunities, such as training to address licensing requirements and resource sustainability.
Speakers
- Johnathon Davey, Chair of the Aquaculture and Wild Catch Industry Reference Committee (IRC) will speak about the role of the IRC to support the industry.
- Helen Jenkins, Aquatic Biosecurity Liaison Officer at Animal Health Australia and Member of the Aquaculture and Wild Catch IRC, will speak about the results of a recent northern Australian aquaculture industry biosecurity survey.

This forum is targeted at industry leaders at all levels, who want to participate in strategic discussions about future job roles, skills needs, challenges and opportunities.

Your feedback will help us to update the IRC Skills Forecast. Skills forecasts capture evidence about significant changes, opportunities and potential disruption ahead in a sector. This is the key document that informs the government of priority skill needs and seeks funding for projects to review and develop qualifications, skill sets and units of competency. Celebrating 50 years of WAFIC
The Fishing & Aquaculture Industry Skills Forum is being held in the lead up to the WA Fishing Industry Council’s (WAFIC) golden jubilee celebration that evening. WAFIC is the peak industry body representing WA’s commercial fishing, pearling and aquaculture sectors. Skills Impact is honoured to be working alongside the WAFIC to celebrate this important anniversary and the recent growth and achievements in the industry.
In the evening, WAFIC will host a cocktail-style event, to reflect on the history of these industries – from where it all began to the people that have played a role.
The evening is inspired by WAFIC’s seafood trail. It will include a seafood feast prepared by renown chef, Don Hancey, in collaboration with EFYC head chef David Yang, paired with a selection of top Western Australian wines and drinks.
